Expandable Detail Previous    Page 22 of 25    Next

The previous page of this tour showed how any texture can be rendered at a higher resolution. Often, however, a designer may wish to make a texture bigger for the purpose of making it repeat less often, without stretching the actual details within it.

A red dot has been added to the above texture to show how often it repeats. With traditional texture making techniques, getting an existing texture to repeat less often requires it to be repainted from scratch.

The stone texture in the above illustration repeats fairly often, as indicated by the red dots. A designer could stretch the above texture, however, that would make the details in the texture bigger. What is really needed is the ability to add details to the texture, so that when it is rendered at a larger resolution it retains its original character, yet now repeats less often.

With just a couple mouse clicks, Genetica will automatically insert more detail into any texture. Thus, the previous texture is easily made to repeat less often, as indicated by the red dots.

Amazingly, with a simple click of the "zoom out" feature, Genetica will automatically add any amount of detail to any texture, as the above illustration exemplifies. Thus, users of Genetica can make any texture repeat less often, while retaining the texture's original character. This ability to zoom in and out of a texture at will not only allows designers to quickly repurpose the same textures to a variety of end uses, but also saves huge amounts of resources when advancements in technology require more detailed textures.
